Chronic pain management
Chronic pain is persistent and ongoing and even low-level pain can have a debilitating effect. For people who suffer with it, chronic pain can feel like a life sentence which can take over their lives.

Drugs, although effective in many cases, are not always the best solution, especially for long-term usage. Hypnotherapy, however, can help people control and manage their pain, it has no side effects, and it’s impact grows with use rather than losing it’s effectiveness.

In fact, pain relief is one of the earliest uses of hypnosis in the modern world. In the early 19th century a British Doctor called James Braid was working in a Calcutta hospital and performing surgeries with out any form of pain relief as this was before the advent of anaesthesia. He carried out over 3000 surgeries using hypnosis and found that his mortality rate during surgery dropped from a high of 50% to a low of 5%.

Hypnosis in pain relief taps into the “mind / body” connection that is generally ignored in Western medicine. In the West we are taught that we have little control over our physiological functions, but this is not true. Our minds are incredibly powerful and have the ability generate chemical and physical responses. We prove this almost every day of our lives. We are flooded with good feelings (endorphins) when we see, hear, smell or touch something that has a positive association to it. It is our minds that create these associations and it is our minds that signal the release of the chemicals into our bodies

The same is true for negative feelings. When we feel threatened or frightened our body releases adrenaline and other chemicals that give us strength, heightened awareness and an increased ability to flee or stay and fight. Again the trigger for the chemical release is from our mind, not our body. Our minds also have the ability provide pain release, we just have to learn how to do this.

Lisa works with her clients to teach them tools and techniques to tap into this “mind / body” connection. These tools include self-hypnosis, deep relaxation and visualisation. The aim of the sessions is to teach each client these techniques so they are able to use them whenever and where ever they need, rather than remain dependent on the therapist. Although different for each client, the program usually lasts between 3 and 5 sessions.

Areas of pain management that hypnosis can be affective include:
