Hypnosis in the Mainstream
Hypnotherapy Studies
In a recent Daily Express article, published in August 2007, the Health
Editor Victoria Fletcher writes about a new study with breast cancer
patients in New York. In this study, conducted by the Mount Sinai School of
Medicine, hypnotherapy is used to help combat pain and reduce the levels of
anaesthesia needed.
The study looked at using hypnotherapy prior to surgery and then assessed
the amount of drugs patients needed both during the surgery and after. The
study showed that patients who underwent a 15 minute session of hypnosis an
hour prior to surgery had shorter surgery times and needed fewer drugs and
consequently felt better after the surgery. The reduction of drugs during
the surgery reduced their post surgical side affects such as nausea, fatigue
and emotional distress.
This story was picked up by the BBC and was added to its growing catalogue
of articles about hypnosis being used in the medical mainstream. Another
story in the BBC online Health section highlights the use of hypnosis, which
is now being taught to selected midwives in Scotland, to help women give
birth naturally and reduce the need for pain medications during labour. By
learning relaxation techniques through self-hypnosis, women can manage the
discomfort, remain calm and have a more peaceful birthing experience.

NLP
NLP, which has its roots in hypnosis, is also growing in the public
consciousness and in acceptance. One of the best known NLP practitioners is
Paul McKenna. Although many people still think of him as a hypnotist, much
of the work that he is involved in today, in programs such as “I can change
your life” on Sky, uses NLP to help people achieve their goals.
NLP is used widely in the field of life coaching, counselling and self-help
programs because it uses our own internal dialogue to help let go of worries
and fears and focus on what we want to achieve. It is also used extensively
in the business world, helping increase confidence and motivation. It is
also used in training sales people, teaching people how to “read” the
customer more effectively and then use that knowledge to align the product
that is being sold.
