Losing weight is not just about eating less food and doing more exercise. The relationship that people have with food can be quite complex. If losing weight was that simple then obesity would not be the issue that it is today in our society.

The conventional way to lose weight is through rigorous dieting. Most diets, if the rules are strictly followed, will help people lose weight. The problem with diets though is that once a person stops following the rules, all the behaviours regarding food that created the weight problem in the first place will tend to put the weight back on. This is the dreaded cycle of yo-yo dieting.

Therefore, in order to shed weight forever and not just for the period of time when a set of rules are being followed, it’s the behaviours which need to be dealt with and not just the levels of fat or numbers of calories.

For some people, food is linked to feelings love and comfort. The smells and tastes can remind us of our childhood when we were safe and looked after.

Others are trapped in eating habits learned as children. “Don’t leave food on your plate”, “eat what you are given”, are just two lessons parents often teach. The other difficulty with food is that we cannot eliminate it from our lives. It would be much simpler if we could just cut it out of our lives altogether, but we need to eat and therefore we need to learn to live with food in our lives.
